A favourite haunt of designers and architects, Mille Luce offers a dizzying display of modern sconces, fixtures, pendants, shades and chandeliers, largely European made. The store also specializes in Artemide’s elegant lines: new for 2008 are suspension lamps shaped like mercury droplets or drinking glasses, as well as Karim Rashid’s Cadmo blown-glass floor lamps ($2,000). Fabbian’s Hungry chandelier ($4,000), built out of silver cutlery, is a showstopper. California’s Bruck Lighting sports a wide range of eco-friendly LED track and fixture systems in their Ledra series. Custom-built chandeliers are also popular, from $1,500 to upwards of $15,000.
