Furniture can be mistaken for sculpture in this big, ambitious, warehouse-like space in the Art and Design District. Case goods, seating, occasional and dining tables, wall dividers, sconces and lamps—many designed by owners Hanson Tan and Gary Flaherty—are made of materials as diverse as hardwoods, metals, skins, vellum, parchment and shagreen. Theirs is a high-minded contemporary aesthetic, with pieces so clever and sharp that you might be afraid to use them. But don’t be. Form and function serve each other well, as in the duo’s austere Waterfall Desk ($5,706), a three-sided high-gloss oak rectangle whose only embellishment is a band of coppery steel on its legs. Imported lines—the fine-boned luxury of centuries-old furniture updated by Dessin Fournir; stainless steel neo-deco works by Brueton; American sculptor Wendell Castle’s wood designs; and spider-like lighting from iconic Frenchman Serge Mouille—approach design as though it were religion.
