Free parking and a colossal steel structure covering some 200,000 square feet of sofas, beds and dining rooms may sound more like IKEA than a high-end furniture emporium, but somehow Elte makes it work beautifully. Natural light floods through warehouse-style windows and casts a flattering glow, making chandeliers twinkle and silk sofas look especially lustrous and welcoming. Casually arranged in the bedding area are antique beds swathed in the finest linens, such as a Bella Notte king coverlet ($365), Yves Delorme sheets and mid-priced house label sets (queen $475). In lighting, there’s a preponderance of burnished brass fixtures. Furniture is organized by style and collection: the clubby, masculine look of Ralph Lauren’s Mercer Street leather sofa ($11,465); the traditional feel of Lillian August and Althorp’s Preston Wing Chair $3,605; and the contemporary comfort of Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams’ slipcovered sleeper sofa. Of course, carpets are what started it all, so it’s fitting that a third of the floor space is devoted to every sort of area rug and runner imaginable.
