The Bloor Street showroom feels like a small sculpture gallery with a focus on clean, modern Danish design. The stars of this show are the self-calibrating BeoLab 5 loudspeakers ($23,200), which use an unconventional acoustic lens system to distribute mid- to high-range frequencies horizontal to the floor, so they are not reflected before they reach the listener’s ear. (They look like the Daleks from Doctor Who, or they would, if Daleks started wearing tuxedos.) The BeoSound 9000 wall-mounted CD changer ($5,600) displays six disks behind a pane of glass, while a motorized reader moves so swiftly that the pause between disks is no greater than the brief pause between songs. Sleek and ergonomic, A8 earphones ($200) blow the ubiquitous standard iPod earbuds out of the water, and let you experience B&O quality and design without breaking the bank. It’s true that you might find cheaper equipment elsewhere, some of it with better performance, but you won’t find anything that looks quite this cool.
