For decorating on a shoestring, consider buying rental furniture. Retired pieces—including sofas, dressers, dining sets and office furniture—occupy the back corner of Executive Furniture Rentals’ cavernous showroom. Most items remain in reasonable condition; the bargain prices make this shop ideal for furnishing dorms, cottages and rec rooms. Upholstered goods often have a Holiday Inn aesthetic, but on one visit, a stylishly slouchy camel-coloured sofa was $249. Some furniture is like new: a pristine six-piece bedroom set in dark wood with brushed metal trim went for $650. If second-hand beds don’t creep you out, Posturepedic mattress sets start at $100. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, it could be in the back, so just ask.
