A neighbourhood institution since 1968, this brightly lit two-level store carries sports clothing and equipment at bargain prices. Rotating sales take place every six to eight weeks. One day, tennis racquets from Wilson sold for $40, rubber Spalding basketballs for $10 and brand name footwear for $49.99. But, as generations of North Yorkers know, the store’s real forte is hockey: used boys’ skates were recently priced at $59.99, while used girls’ figure skates began at $49.99. Staff ensure hockey bags are properly stuffed, and that all the gear inside fits future Gretzkys properly. A two-week hockey sale takes place every year in August.
