With nine locations in Ontario, Fitness Source wields huge buying power: since all equipment comes directly from the manufacturer, the chain is able to beat competitors’ prices. Its reputation for bringing in the newest, most cutting-edge fitness items also attracts many professional athletes, as does the friendly staff, who often have sports backgrounds and who don’t work on commission. A two-and-a-half-horsepower Vision treadmill goes for $1,560 and a Bowflex home gym for $999. Free weights sell by the pound, from 59 cents for iron dumbbells to 99 cents for rubber. Stacked in the front corner are yoga mats ($15–$40) and Forza stability balls ($15–$30).
