Stay-ups, stockings and knee-highs, oh my. “If women can get over two guys selling them pantyhose, they’ll see we know our stuff,” says Frank Bellissimo, the chatty co-owner (he and Enzo Spitzzirri have been in business together for 17 years). Discussing fishnet patterns and (my goodness!) control top panels with a pair of 40-something men can be giggle-inducing, but inhibitions are quickly shed in the face of good value and figure first aid. Indeed, the Oprah-endorsed line of Spanx body slimmers (including plus-size and maternity variations) draws the crowd, but the sizable assortment of everyday hosiery from the likes of Dim, Silks, Givenchy, Donna Karen, Hue, Mura Berkshire and Calvin Klein is the main event. As a general rule, workday basics are priced a few dollars below retail, while big discounts of 50 per cent are given to end of season, over-stocks and more esoteric offerings—fuchsia crochet tights, or grey pinstripe stay-ups, for instance. Luxury ultra-sheer stockings from Filodoro or Philippe Matignon are a wedding day must; here you’ll save 10 to 15 per cent off boutique prices. Two fitting rooms and a no-secrets-here atmosphere encourage you to try before you buy. The shop also carries costume jewellery and shape wear by Nancy Ganz and Bodywrap.
