A door is a door is a door, right? If that’s your thinking, Sam Mirshak would like a word. Since 1972, he’s been foraging through old homes for the most stately and ornate things to come on hinges—elegant entryways, often with lavish glasswork. Interior doors begin at $50; the outdoor variety start at $350. While most of them are harvested from century homes in Ontario, Quebec and the northeastern United States, Mirshak also brings in older styles from France and Egypt, many of which feature ornamental iron. The latter are more expensive (up to $5,000), but then you’re paying for history. Doors are the obvious draw here, but they’re a gateway to a reasonably priced array of sumptuous furnishings, from knobs and grills to light fixtures and fireplace mantels. Visitors who don’t end up with a vintage gem will walk away with plenty of ideas.
