The king of the big boxes, Home Depot is an icon of suburbia. Which is why the store in the heart of south Riverdale seems so out of place. But good things come in big packages, too, and HD has much to offer the duplex-dwelling DIY crowd. The store has raw building materials aplenty, so strap on a carpenter apron, buy some lumber and work your magic with a seven-and-a-quarter-inch Skil circular saw ($59.98) or, for smaller projects, a Stanley mini-multi-saw ($13.76). Gardeners can buy huge bags of Miracle Mulch ($4.47) and get to work with a round-point shovel ($13.75) or tidy lawns with a Toro blower–vacuum–leaf shredder ($89). For the home, there’s everything from ceiling fans to floor coverings, paint to appliances (a little Danby bar fridge for $188), furniture to lighting ($64.95 for an antique brass floor lamp). Clean up afterward with a Quickie brand twist mop ($14.97).
