This seven-year-old College Street shop hawks the cream of the indie music crop to both young and old, the fashionably hip and the hopelessly uncool. But while staff have the cred—owner Greg Davis describes them as music fanatics, eating, sleeping and breathing music—the requisite pretension is lacking: say you’re interested in Gram Parsons and you’ll get a recommendation for a “best of” disc as a first listen, rather than a rare album only hard core fans might enjoy. Listening stations dotted around the convenience store–size shop each offer three new discs from varying genres, along with clippings of recent reviews. Searching out a specific title might prove tricky—check the general alphabetized section and new release wall first, but staff might be able to locate it in Americana, bluegrass, experimental, garage or local music. The back of the store is devoted to indie and local musicians. Cash only for concert tickets; look out for free in-store performances a few hours before shows.
