When Harry Allard bought Woodington Lake in the early 1990s, it was a work in progress. He pumped up the bunkers and greens, finished off a stretch of missing holes and added a handsome clubhouse. Without much fanfare, Woodington Lake has turned into one of the GTA’s top spots. The Legend Course, cradled in the quiet hills that rise northwest of Pearson airport, is all about positioning: you’ll need to hit it to the smart side of the fairway, one that isn’t blocked by wetlands, heavy rough or unforgiving pine trees. Allard launched a second 18, named the Legacy, in June 2007; it bends around the Legend. In order to construct it on top of former farm fields, Allard pushed around lots of dirt, rimming the fairways with skyscraper mounding and lining them with tough waste bunkers and fescue. To add a bit of danger, he also scooped out a half-dozen ponds and then stretched the whole shebang all the way back to an eye-popping 7,600 yards from the tips. The two layouts at Woodington Lake may prove to be the toughest one-two punch in the province.
