In 2001, this 1960s course was redesigned by Ted Baker, the man behind Lionhead. At 5,480 yards from the tips, it plays like an executive course for long stretches. Neither of the par fives reaches 475 yards, and the first four holes (all of them par fours) are around 300 yards each. To compensate for the lack of length, the rough has been over-seeded and maintained at about three or four inches. The run of pancake-flat par fours, requiring back-to-back eight irons, is simply no fun. Much better is the back nine; known as the Southside, it almost redeems the experience. Here, the wind makes every club decision a tough one. At 428 yards, the 13th hole seems a monstrous par four. The next, playing downwind, is all of 464 yards; as par fives go, this is an easy birdie—don’t bother bragging about your eagle. Since the redesigned course has not yet been officially sloped, a round here won’t even affect your handicap index.
