Originally designed as a private country club layout by Stanley Thompson in 1921, Peel Village is now a public course owned by the City of Brampton. In 1988, both course and clubhouse were revamped by architects Robert and David Moote, the former having worked for Thompson; you can see the master’s influence in the elevated tees and greens, and the strategically placed fairway bunkers. Lately, the course has become a poster child for environmentally responsible golf. Since 1995 it has drastically reduced its use of pesticides, and was the first municipal course in Canada to earn the coveted Audubon certificate for its eco-conscious efforts. Holes are mostly stand-alone, individually framed by hardwoods and the rise and fall of the valley. It’s a subtle course, all about placement off the tee, so big boppers should lock up their drivers in the trunks of their cars. A perfect example is the third hole, which should be an easy birdie. However, the 456-yard par five is a rare double dogleg—try to bite off too much corner and you’ll be stymied by a wall of trees.
