Lionhead Golf & Country Club, The Legendsstarstarstarstarstar

If golfers are masochists (and they are), then the Legends course at Lionhead is the grand dominatrix of the Toronto golf scene. For a substantial fee, she offers an array of exquisite punishments: deep bunkers, tall fescue, the wide Credit River, undulating elevated greens, and a number of ponds. She even trash-talks: on the fourth hole, a large sign bluntly warns golfers that they are responsible for any damage they do to the houses lining the fairway. Ouch. Still, the Ted Baker–designed course is a beautiful and well-maintained layout that rambles through a rugged section of the Credit River Valley. One of the most memorable holes is the eighth, a long par three over a pond full of massive bulrushes. You’ll have to climb up onto a lookout just to see that there is indeed a green somewhere among the hazards. Bring lots of balls and a sense of humour, and feel the pleasure in all that pain.
