Hockley Valley Resortstarstarstarstar

Resort courses typically pride themselves on either their playability or their physical features. Tom McBroom’s hillside links offer vistas aplenty, but ease of play is another matter. On this target course—with many tee shots launched out of the line of sight—it’s the par threes that will befuddle most. How, for instance, does one play the 172-yard 10th? With a drop of more than 100 feet—and even the slightest of winds—club selection is not only key, it’s near impossible. Go down one or two clubs as suggested, and you may hit no more than an eight- or nine-iron. Add the loft of that club to the drop and you’ll have more than 200 vertical flight affecting your ProV1. A 200-foot drop with a slice wind? When the marshal suggests you have at least a dozen balls in your bag, he’s not kidding. Hockley is so hilly that it’s literally unwalkable—you must take a cart—though for every time you curse your misjudged yardage you will at least take solace in the unparalleled view. The course is sloped at 130, so it’s best to use the scorecard for reference only.
