Glen Eagle Golf Clubstarstarstar½

This is a ball striker’s course, with uneven fairway lies and difficult approaches. Rene Muylaert’s 1962 layout comprises a troika of nines, all containing the same key elements: pinched landing areas, a multitude of bunkers, rolling fairways and large, elevated, heavily contoured greens with myriad pin positions. The Red nine is by far the most difficult. At 3,521 yards from the tips, it puts the driver in your hands for five of the six driving holes, yet demands precise tee shots. Eight and nine make for a tough finish: the former is a 170-yard par three with a deep, sod-lined bunker on the left; the latter, a 650-yard odyssey, will be a four-shotter for most players. The Blue nine, at 3,461 yards, is no slouch either. Your only real birdie opportunities are at the fifth and seventh, both short par fives without the standard elevated green. The Yellow offers a chance to come back after the pounding of the Red nine; it’s considerably shorter, at 3,227 yards. Birdies are to be had here if you play smart; the third, fifth, seventh and ninth (all short par fours) will reward a long iron down the pipe.
