This well-maintained course has an impressive pedigree: renowned Canadian landscape architects Tom McBroom and C.E. Robbie Robinson played a part in its design. Alas, its location—just a sand wedge north of the QEW—is a drawback, since the buzz of traffic is heard on the opening holes. Once you’re away from the noise, Deerfield offers a reasonable round with a few challenges. It’s deceivingly compact: though the first and last holes total 1,100-plus yards, the rest of the course adds little more than 5,000. But what the course gives up in length, it takes back in water hazards and slick greens. The par five 10th is a perfect example. Though it measures a mere 466 yards from the tips, the challenge comes from the skinny fairway and the trees along the length of the left rough. For long-ball hitters, the green is reachable in two, but the shot has to be perfect: a creek stands between you and the green. Once on the green, you’re faced with a knee-knocking putt on the sloped surface. Leave your ball short on most holes; if you’re too aggressive, you’ll be left with slick downhill putts that can quickly turn routine pars into big numbers.
