Valiantly resisting an encroaching subdivision, in 2005 Castlemore underwent a resourceful redesign by architect Kevin Homes that included lots and lots of water. Still, large homes now virtually surround the 16th and 17th holes—once fully occupied, they’ll provide a gallery of backyard suburbanites to cheer on golfers’ efforts and mock their incompetence. Though quite short, Castlemore offers some especially challenging par threes. The sixth is a demonic 180-yarder to a small green with water wrapped three-quarters of the way around, and bushes and fescue on the left. From the 171-yard 11th, cross a pond and a creek to a large, two-tiered green guarded right and left by bunkers. All in all, Castlemore survived the first suburban onslaught in fine form. Hopefully there won’t be a second.
