Located just a few minutes from Doug Carrick’s renowned triptych at Osprey Valley, this challenging nine-hole warm-up was also put together by the U of T landscape design grad. Perfect greens and reasonable fees make Calerin an 18-hole test of its own. Two sets of tees help the course succeed where most nine-holers fail, presenting truly different challenges round by round. This is most evident on the par three second (also the 11th), which plays at either 120 or 187 yards. At the par four sixth (or 15th), a dogleg right, it’s not the yardage that’s so different (383 yards versus 392), but rather your angle and options off the tee. The elevated tee tempts you into hitting over the forest, right at the green. Hit it high and straight (270 to 280 yards) and you’ll have a shortish uphill pitch to the green; layup with an iron to the end of the dogleg, and green-side bunkers become bigger factors. When it becomes the 15th, you’ll be teeing at fairway level and likely feeling much less brave than you were before your round began.
