Given that the GTA’s newest golf courses often cater to the skilled and deep of pocketbook, it’s fun to visit this 40-year-old veteran, which welcomes golfers of all levels and wage packets. It’s short, allowing you to play from the tips (for once) and still finish with a scrap of pride. With small greens and flat fairways, Acton is by no means a future Canadian Open venue, but it is a good spot for your own Father and Son Open (or Mom and Daughter, for that matter). Putting surfaces are well kept and roll at a reasonable pace; while the fairways don’t have the lawn-bowling consistency of higher-end courses, the relative shagginess provides a nice, fluffy lie. The rough is not really rough, which can embolden the timid off the tee, and makes for fun chipping around the greens. But don’t get too confident—water comes into play on four of the first five holes. And while two par fives under 450 yards give mortal golfers a hope at eagle, the par threes can easily claw those strokes back. At 195 and 200 yards respectively, the fourth and fifth holes are long par threes on any course; a series of three in the back nine determines the fate of your round.
