Flat, lush and surrounded by water, Silver Lakes looks and plays like a Florida course, plastic alligators lurking in its ponds and shadows. Fairways appear narrower than they are: this is no place to play a slice. Don’t let the treeline fool you, as balls hit akimbo are likely underwater, and 12 holes are surrounded by wetlands. Excellent bunkers come into play on almost every hole, none more so than the par three third. Though just 158 yards, it’s a double-bogey waiting to happen—the carry over the pond is one thing, but avoiding the three bunkers is another (and every pin placement brings one into play). A long dogleg, the eighth requires a 265-yard drive over a pond. Play it from the whites (465 yards) or blues (492 yards) and you can hit it through the fairway and thus be blocked from a shortish approach by some trees up the left side. Greens and fairways are impeccable.
