An excellent Rene Muylaert design, this challenging and immaculately conditioned 27-hole layout rolls through forested terrain reminiscent of Muskoka. The longest and most difficult of the trio of nines—expanded in 1990 from the original 18—is the Highlands. The 554-yard, par five opening hole plays long, because many players who glimpse the narrow fairway cut among the cedars opt for a long iron off the tee. Indeed, anyone who sprays the ball off the tee should keep the driver in their bag, since many of the 27 holes offer similarly stingy landing areas on swaled fairways mined with bunkers. Slightly less punishing are the Southern Uplands and Midlands nines, which generally feature larger and more receptive greens. But beware: Midlands’ ninth hole is one of the most difficult par fives around. The 525-yard score-killer forces golfers to hit pinpoint first and second shots to narrow landing areas edged by forest and a pond that runs the length of the fairway. Get by these impediments, and a tricky uphill third to a contoured green (which drops abruptly into a ravine) awaits. It’s easily one of the most picturesque courses in the GTA.

27 holes. Highlands: nine holes, 3,409 yards, par 37. Midlands: nine holes, 3,409 yards, par 36. Southern Uplands: nine holes, 2,926 yards, par 35
