This old Stouffville faithful has been revamped over the past few years. First, the numbering of the holes has changed to accommodate the new clubhouse just off Markham Road; play now begins on the old 17th, a par four that requires a very accurate opening drive over a pond to a narrow fairway cut through deep, dark woods. Having a liberal mulligan policy might be useful for getting your round started. From there, the course offers a wide variety of challenges, notably the 415-yard 13th, an uphill, dogleg par four; and the 164-yard 10th, a downhill, pond-guarded par three. Water comes into play on 10 holes, and there are a few where trees and those dreaded white stakes lurk menacingly close to the fairway (if you’re in the habit of drifting right, aim well left on three, four and five). The course is always in reasonable condition and tough enough to challenge good players, but fair enough for the high handicapper. If you plan on using the range before your game, arrive early. You have to stop at the clubhouse to get tokens, then drive down to the range to hit your balls.
