Knowledge is power—and if your game is power, the following information might save your round here. Many of the Highlands’ par fives (and a few par fours) are dissected by a shallow, rough-heavy creek. Unfortunately, neither the scorecard nor the tee-side graphics offer any clues as to how far out it lies. However, if you walk straight from the tee box toward the hole, a sunken marker indicating precisely how far you need to hit it to clear the trouble will become visible. Look for this on every hole, deep in the longer grass. Keep an eye on adjacent holes to see which creeks are wet and which aren’t. The eighth is a moderate 167 yards, but the tee box is about 10 yards above the green, which slopes severely from the back right to the front left. The effect is as if you’re aiming sideways, and anything landing close to the pin feels quite satisfying. It’s not the prettiest course in the GTA, but the variety of tests and value for money make Highlands worthy of a round. Three years ago, the bunkers were redone and most holes received new tee boxes, adding about 200 yards to the overall length.

18 holes, 6,708 yards, par 72
