Eagles Neststarstarstarstar½

Built on the sandpits and gravel quarries adjacent to the old Keele Street dump, Eagles Nest is a rough-hewn links-land fantasia of sand dunes, fescue, Pine Valley–esque waste areas and 91 bunkers (some of which are so deep they have ladders to help the weary golfer ascend). Doug Carrick’s magic dazzles players at the third, a 450-yard par four from an elevated tee that sweeps down into the valley, over a majestic oak and onto a wide, rolling fairway below. Thereafter, you will find a variety of challenges, ranging from the sublime (don’t let the panoramic view of the city from the eighth distract you from this 164-yard par three) to the nightmarish (the 242-yard 15th requires a high, soft-landing metal wood to a shallow, rock-hard green with a sod-wall bunker in front and a collection area in back). At nearly 7,500 yards, Eagles Nest is long. By round’s end, you’ll need to relax with a drink on the clubhouse deck, where you can watch the black swans or take malicious joy in seeing other golfers negotiate the treacherous lake, demonic bunkers and narrow green on the 484-yard (par four!) 18th.

18 holes, 7,476 yards, par 72
