The original course at Angus Glen is a work of art. Doug Carrick’s masterpiece grips you from the opening hole—often cited as the toughest opener in all of Ontario—and leaves you breathless, right up until the final green, nestled in the hill leading to the palatial clubhouse. Carrick made the most of the gorgeous rolling terrain and the serpentine creek that comes into play on several holes. The first wakes you up with a long second shot to a green guarded by an enormous pond. There’s a brief respite at the third hole, which is relatively hazard-free, but the fourth, fifth and sixth (which curve gracefully through hilly, forested marshland) are as treacherous as they are beautiful—like encountering three femme fatales. By the fabulous elevated ninth tee, you will have succumbed to the charms of the South Course. It is long—even the white tees are more than 6,400 yards—but each hole has a distinct character. The service and practice facilities are state of the art. Only one note of caution: the course gets a lot of use, and by summer’s end it can be a little worse for wear. The endless stream of charity and corporate event players who flow through here don’t always repair ball marks, fix divots or rake the traps.
