The Links of Niagara at Willodellstarstarstarstar

While the “links” part is certainly a misnomer—the course is actually a tree-lined parkland—there is quite a lot to like about Willodell. Its low green fees are terrific value, and the practice facilities are comparable to those at the top private clubs. Even better, the owners continue to pump profits back into the facilities. Most recently, the clubhouse and pro shop were renovated, and the final gold tees were installed in 2009. Located mere minutes from the Falls, the course opened in 1964 and was designed by Nicol Thompson, Stanley Thompson’s older brother. While Nicol was perhaps better known for being the head pro at Hamilton Golf & Country Club for more than three decades, he definitely knew his way around a blueprint. On the front nine, the standout hole is the fifth, a short 320-yard par four that teases you off the tee. A creek cuts across the fairway at the 220-yard mark, so you can either unleash the driver or layup to play it safe. The back loop is longer, tighter and tougher than the front nine. Take special care on the 13th, a 443-yard par four that doglegs left and finishes with a sloping green.
