Course architect Tom McBroom may have lost the coin toss to Doug Carrick when they flipped for dibs on designing the Legends property, but he must nevertheless be pleased with the results. Laid across a couple of hundred acres of wooded parkland, Ussher’s Creek—named after the stream that zigzags through the course and comes into play on approximately half the holes—is more minimalist than the Battlefield layout. It has narrower landing areas and smaller greens; McBroom’s bunkers are more subtle, and are frequently hidden from the tee, so a good read of the pocket pro is absolutely essential in order to score well. The course has a number of intriguing holes, including the 14th, a 556-yard par five, its fairway bisected by sand and a no-go stretch of fescue. The sixth hole is another risk-reward tester; the 439-yard par four bends around a 12-acre lake, teasing adventurous players to cut a fat corner of the water so as to shorten the approach shot. As an added bonus, a golf academy equipped with both indoor and outdoor practice facilities is now up and running.
