As the poorer cousin of the championship North Course, Deer Creek South is shorter and less demanding, but still offers a challenging test of golf at a reasonable price. While public, it feels like a private club, with its majestic clubhouse and such first-rate services as in-cart GPS systems. Stone benches and tables beside each tee add yet another touch of class. The fourth on Sapphire is a picturesque par three that will test your mettle. At 137 yards from the back tee, it’s not a long hole, but with a large pond surrounding the front and sides of the green, and a bunker at the back, you can’t risk being short or long. The island green on number four is a 150-yard, par three shot that will challenge even seasoned golfers. The second hole on Emerald is marked by a severely sloped green; hitting from a slightly elevated tee box, it’s hard to judge the distance on this 210-yard par three. It’s better to be short here, as putting back down the green’s slippery slope is not for the faint of heart.

18 holes. Sapphire: nine holes, 3,110 yards, par 36. Emerald: nine holes, 2,935 yards, par 35
