Designed by Stanley Thompson in 1926, this nine-hole course on the Lake Muskoka shore has recently been overshadowed by its flashy younger brother, Taboo. However, the older, wiser sibling has maintained some charm—not to mention a few teeth. The signature hole is still the fourth (a 168-yard par three over a bog), but the course has other gems of subtle beauty and menacing challenge. The 490-yard, par five third is a sweeping downhill double dogleg, with out of bounds along the left and a pine- and shrub-strewn cliff along the right. It then crosses a valley to a tiny, elevated green—how often do you hit to an elevated green from a downhill lie? Also a beauty, the seventh is a 407-yard par four that calls for a solid fade around the corner from the tee and a deadly accurate short iron to another tiny green, tucked behind a deep, pitiless gully. You won’t find them much prettier (or much tougher) at Taboo; come see how the old master handled the gorgeous, rolling Muskoka landscape.
