Already playing to a stone-cold slope rating of 153 from the tips, this gorgeous brute has grown even tougher with renovations to the par four sixth, where an elevated green discourages the bump-and-run-and-hope tactics of high handicappers. The Ron Garl–designed track, part of Taboo Resort, offers a roller-coaster ride through marshland, thick stands of pine, and great slashes of Canadian Shield granite. Garl’s evil genius is on full display at the seventh, a monstrous 218-yard par three that cuts through a craggy chute of striated granite. Leak it to the left or right and the ball bounces into the stratosphere. Along for the ride is 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir, Taboo’s official spokesman, who dispenses playing advice via a GPS screen in every cart. But even Weir might have trouble breaking par at such a superb course demanding long carries over wasteland and booby-trapped with 21 pot bunkers.

18 holes, 7,285 yards, par 71
