Already playing to a stone-cold slope rating of 153 from the tips, this gorgeous brute has grown even tougher with renovations to the par four sixth, where an elevated green discourages the bump-and-run-and-hope tactics of high handicappers. The Ron Garl–designed track, part of Taboo Resort, offers a roller-coaster ride through marshland, thick stands of pine, and great slashes of Canadian Shield granite. Garl’s evil genius is on full display at the seventh, a monstrous 218-yard par three that cuts through a craggy chute of striated granite. Leak it to the left or right and the ball bounces into the stratosphere. Even pros might have trouble breaking par at such a superb course, demanding long carries over wasteland and booby-trapped with 21 pot bunkers.

18 holes, 7,340 yards, par 71
