Sam Young’s club is worth the drive out of the city. Not only is the course fun and challenging (not to mention affordable), but the strokes you’ll save by availing yourself of the full practice facility will also justify the extra quarters it cost to escape the GTA. The redesign of a few years back (making the course a full 18) plays well. Some stretches feel distinctly links-like, though all the fairways are wide and dotted with just a few traps. The 450-yard, par four fifth is the toughest test, usually requiring flight control to counter the wind. Players of all handicaps will enjoy the long, uphill, par five 12th. It’s more or less straightaway, but at 546 yards you’ll require precision on your layup—and with the wind, a layup may be your only option—if you want to take advantage of the kidney-shaped green. Twelve is well bunkered in front, so avoid the left side of the fairway. Leave yourself with a pitch up the throat, get a good roll, and you might get a birdie.
