This 280-acre project may be the best golf course community in the entire country. Spearheaded by Toronto condo developer Peter Freed, Muskoka Bay officially opened to much acclaim in July 2006, and is driving house sales in the area. The terrific Doug Carrick–designed course free-falls from rocky-topped tees through heavily treed valleys and wetlands, then rises to elevated greens that slope away to sand. There’s even some controversy. The ninth hole plays across a fen to a sliver of fairway that is squeezed tighter than an old-fashioned corset by huge chunks of granite. For the inaugural season, the club made do with a temporary clubhouse; a permanent one, which will peer out over the first and 18th greens, is in the works.

18 holes, 7,367 yards, par 72
