Ravines, creeks, ponds, minuscule landing areas and wildly undulating greens combine to make this one of Ontario’s toughest resort courses. The par four fifth is easily the most difficult hole on a front nine that drops and then climbs back up Blue Mountain. It requires a pinpoint drive from an elevated tee to a fairway pinched by trees and hillocks; the approach shot to the small green guarded by bunkers and a large pond is no easier. Even the par three 10th—a mere 134 yards from the tips—packs a wallop. The carry is over a windblown gully to a moulded green protected by cavernous bunkers; balls that drift even slightly to the right are lost forever in a dark forest. Monterra’s finishing holes keep up the pressure. Seventeen is a 347-yard par four, lined on the left side by a waste bunker that regularly causes scorecard hikes. Eighteen is a 495-yard par five that appears friendly from the tee but has a closely cropped fairway, encouraging wayward shots to drain left into the pond guarding the green.

18 holes, 6,581 yards, par 72
