Lake St. George Golf and Country Clubstarstarstar

Overshadowed by its glamorous (and more expensive) neighbours close by in Muskoka, family-run Lake St. George boasts an impressive pedigree nonetheless: the South nine was designed by Robbie Robinson, while Bob Moote mapped out West. The South, typically the starting nine, snakes tightly around creeks and through mature hardwoods, and features water hazards on seven holes. Generally more forgiving is Moote’s heavily swaled West, although his par three second is a work of evil genius. But the best might be the original North course. The heart-stopper here is the par three fifth, featuring a 152-yard carry over a pond to an elevated green bordered by a stand of firs, oaks and maples. It’s wonderfully maintained for such a busy course.

27 holes. South: nine holes, 3,230 yards, par 36. North: nine holes, 3,024 yards, par 36. West: nine holes, 2,924 yards, par 36
