Brooklea Golf and Country Clubstarstarstar½

A fixture of the Midland area, this vintage Rene Muylaert design is a cut above the usual public cottage course. This is especially true of the front nine, which drifts over a rolling terrain and criss-crosses a deep, ball-hungry ravine. After an easy opening hole, the real test begins on the second, a 414-yard par four that calls for a bold mid-iron approach over the ravine. The ninth hole is the most distinctive: tee up near an old barn and hit a blind drive to the fescue-lined fairway at the crest of the hill, where you’ll hit downhill to a large green guarded by an enormous trap. It’s gorgeous and tough. The back nine, while considerably tighter, with narrow, tree-lined fairways, is ultimately less interesting than the front. The series of relatively straight, parallel holes becomes a redundant exercise by the time you reach the 16th. Brooklea is worth a trip up Honey Harbour way, though you’ll need to hit it very straight to score well.
