Just 15 minutes southwest of Peterborough, this track opened for play in May 2005 and has a brand new Victorian-style clubhouse. The course, designed by Jack Lally (best known for the
Deer Creek North and
South courses and Jason Miller (OslerBrook), starts with a relatively exposed front nine, then winds through sculpted mounds and fescue-lined fairways. The course changes dramatically on the back, where you are swept into the rolling hills of the Kawartha forest. Number 11, the best hole on the course, calls for a drive over a pond, and a short iron to a large green nestled in the trees. By the 14th, you’ll probably have fallen in love with the tree-lined back nine; however, the last four holes are anticlimactic. Two are uphill par fours that both call for an essentially blind approach shot, probably the least satisfying shot in golf. As well, the 16th is a dogleg that has an enormous tree right in the middle of the fairway. So even if you hit a good tee shot to the corner of the dogleg, you are rewarded with a virtual stymie. Once the course matures, however, there will be many enjoyable and challenging holes.
