Its name conjures images of a formidable course; yet by any yardstick the track is as diminutive as they come. But don’t write off the family-owned Bear too quickly—there are stellar holes. If par threes tickle, there are six stickable ones, none longer than 173 yards from the tips (the fourth and seventh wear more sand than grass). Pleasant to play are a handful of reachable-in-one par fours. On the signature 325-yard 10th, a treed promontory nips the left edge of the fairway. Send your best drive over the valley and the right edge of the trees for a chance at birdie. You might need your driver on a couple of the longer holes—the narrow 531-yard, par five 12th, and 468-yard, par five 17th—but otherwise you can give it a day off.

18 holes, 5,375 yards, par 70
