Atoka Golf Club at Cranberry Resortstarstarstarstar

The knock against environmentally conscious courses is that they don’t have the same high standards when it comes to grooming. But Cranberry is both beautifully groomed and certified by Audubon International, an organization that recognizes eco-friendly courses. Tom McBroom’s championship layout, which traverses wetlands close to the shores of Georgian Bay, has more than good looks going for it. The designer countered the general flatness of the land with narrow fairways dappled with mounds, ponds and 80 bunkers filled with Temisca white sand. On the 424-yard, par four third, all three come into play. Two stunning duos ratchet up the tension on both the front and back nines: the fairways of six and seven are more water than grass, and on 13 and 14, sand is the leitmotif. At the par three 17th, an island-like green will likely have you dreaming of the TPC at Sawgrass.
