Opened for play in July 1960, this conveniently located course unravels like an alley of green amid the rapidly expanding exurbs of Markham. With its collection of immaculately kept fairways, Parkview offers more than enough range to frustrate novices and challenge more experienced players. A case in point is the aptly named Valley course, which takes golfers on a merry chase over hill and dale: from the second hole (a par five), where you tee off from atop a bluff toward a green located 569 yards away, to the sixth, a 351-yard par four, where your second shot must fly over the Rouge River (a factor on approximately half the holes) to find the putting surface. The landscape is a bit stark—little foliage separates the fairways—but the Valley course itself provides plenty of topographical variation to make for a complex round. On Parkview’s Upper course, things are longer, flatter and therefore more straightforward: expect a drive-and-pitch sort of round. A good number of the holes are cut under a hydro right-of-way, and shots that hit the wires are replayed. This leads to the curious phenomenon of players begging that hooked drive to please, please, please make its way toward the power lines overhead.
