Having celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006, Don Valley continues to be one of the most popular and well-liked public courses in the GTA. At less than $60 for 18 holes in prime time, plus good twilight rates all season, it’s no wonder it perennially gets top marks. The Howard Watson design features a variety of interesting holes and some scenic views of the Don Valley. Other than the odd traffic noise from Highway 401 above, you would never know you are in the city. While not long, the course requires precise shotmaking and club selection, for there are many doglegs; positioning off the tee is crucial if you want to score well. The course has undergone significant renovations over the years. The signature hole is the par five 12th, which is 490 yards from the tips. Deep woods flank the left side of the fairways, while a large pond invites disaster on the right. Once you land safely on the fairway, you need to layup to have a chance at reaching the tight, sloping green. A great pro shop offers custom fitting and a policy to beat any competitor’s price on clubs.
