Situated near the last lock before the Trent Severn empties into Georgian Bay, the inn has a pampered, old-world ambience. A 2006 fire led to an overhaul of the older wing, upgrading the decor to match the European styling of the rest of the inn. The newly renovated rooms are smaller—and more affordable—but outfitted with the same linens, carpets and furnishings used in the Count’s Wing—so named for one of the owners, Count Von Goertz. Luxury seekers opt for Room 234, a spacious suite furnished with 1830s Biedermeier antiques, and occupied by the count himself when he is in residence (he lives in Germany). The Teutonic feel carries throughout the airy wing, with marble floors in the rotundas, towering headboards on king-size beds, gas fireplaces, and sliding glass doors that open onto balconies. The inn’s ground-floor spa—which includes an indoor saltwater pool with a view of the waterfront—increasingly draws a year-round crowd. Guests sip tea in the sunny lounge before submitting themselves to a range of aesthetic and therapeutic services.
