Once a run-down fishing camp on the French River’s Wolseley Bay, the Lodge at Pine Cove is now a comfortable cottage retreat popular with artists and nature lovers. The simple cabins combine rustic styling (two have wood stoves, all have pine panelling) with modern comforts (hot water and fine dining). Although guests may still land a muskie in the fall, they can also learn to paint, shoot pool, and paddle a canoe or kayak. Bookworms curl up on a leather sofa in front of the granite fireplace. Each of the 12 cottages features a screened porch with a waterfront view; many have kitchens; all come equipped with mini-fridges. In the dining room, sophisticated fare includes local elk osso buco, and duck confit tortellini with morel mushrooms and foie gras butter. Not to be missed: the scenic pontoon boat cruises on the French River.
