Acquired by the current owners shortly after the road came to town in the 1960s, this Georgian Bay lodge has changed very little in the ensuing years. Guests still dine on fresh whitefish from Georgian Bay in the pine-panelled dining room, which has a deer’s head mounted above the fieldstone fireplace. Several cottages offer waterfront views, but most lodge rooms are geared to outdoor lovers who demand few frills: pine panelling, small but clean three-piece bathrooms, and simple furnishings. The inn is known for its extensive outdoor programs, from guided hikes to sea kayaking. The most popular trip is a full-day sailing excursion aboard the Cal 2-46 to an uncharted cove in the Fox Islands, where passengers are ferried to shore for a walk across one of the smooth pink islands. Passengers can enjoy as much or as little adventure as they feel comfortable with, opting to swim from the boat or simply soak up the September sunshine. One of the gentlest excursions is the two-and-a-half-hour landscape painting trip to Killarney Park’s A.Y. Jackson Lake, to capture views of the quartzite mountains. Artists weren’t the only ones drawn to the area—Jimmy Hoffa of Teamsters fame was said to be a frequent visitor.
