Built by some of Muskoka’s earliest settlers, this two-storey century stone house retains much of its original woodwork. Owners Pam Carnochan and Jamie Honderich use windmills, wood heat and solar power to create an environmentally friendly retreat. It’s also child-friendly: kids like to explore the 77-acre property, with its three ponds (one a beaver pond) and woodland trails. They can feed the horses, collect eggs from the chicken coop and pet sheep. In winter, the driveway makes a good toboggan run. Inside, two guest bedrooms share a bathroom complete with a claw-footed soaker tub. Wildlife prints evoke the owners’ work in wolf research—and remind guests that Algonquin Park is only 32 kilometres away. Breakfast (zucchini frittata, say, or French toast) is served in the kitchen, which overlooks an organic vegetable garden.
