These rafting trips offer just enough whitewater to thrill school-aged kids. In fact, children as young as two can join the two-hour guided excursions down the Madawaska River, bouncing over metre-high rapids in inflatable rafts. Once the adults help launch the rubber vessel, the five-kilometre trek downriver requires little effort, other than helping the youngsters hold on; no paddling is required. Guides steer past kayak traffic, then float down an unspoiled stretch of river, making stops for dipping in or floating through gentle rapids. Madawaska Kanu Centre (1-800-461-7238) also operates a paddling school and whitewater rafting trips on the Ottawa River, departing from Foresters Falls. Stay at the Madawaska Valley Inn (613-756-9014, 1-800-363-2758).
