Set on the shores of Lake Ontario, this historic inn is sufficiently stylish for an adult escape, but parents will feel equally welcome with young children. For those who don’t mind stairs, the third-floor Sandbanks Suite is a cozy two-bedroom retreat, with sloping ceilings and skylights that open to let in the sound of waves. There’s a great view of the lake from the soaker tub in the shared bathroom. Couples seeking romance usually opt for the main-floor Waterfall Suite, so named for the small waterfall outside; a private balcony and oversized air-jet tub add to its appeal. All rooms are decorated in an unfussy manner, with many Canadian antiques. Guests unwind in a library-style sitting room with leather sofas, a television, DVD player (with kid-friendly movies) and games—or, best of all, lounge in a Muskoka chair on the inn’s pebble beach, while the kids search for fossils and driftwood. Breakfast is served in the lakefront restaurant and patio, where the menu features many organic fruits and local cheddar.
