Handy to the Pelee Island ferry, this mainland cousin to the island’s Tin Goose Inn makes a gracious southwestern Ontario base for birders and wine lovers. The Victorian red-brick house has been renovated to give each of the six rooms an ensuite bath, but the original charm remains, particularly in the walnut-panelled dining room, where a lavish breakfast (which might consist of fresh fruit parfaits followed by a savoury egg-and-bread pudding) is served. The decor tends to the whimsical: a collection of vintage pillbox hats, antique biscuit tins, and a red 1950s brocade handbag that hangs from a wrought iron floor lamp. Sunny corner Room 4 is also known as the Dutch Boy Room, for its blue and white decor, and matching pottery. The ground-floor sitting room evokes Sunday afternoons with spinster aunties: upright piano, African violets, bowls of nuts and candies on the fireplace. It’s a comfy spot to unwind with a glass of wine from Pelee Island Winery. The lower level has been converted into a sunny four-room spa.
