Built in 1902, the rambling asymmetrical building, with its shingled roof and series of gables, porches and towers, could be mistaken for a grand summer home on the New England seaboard. A converted veranda makes a sunny, closed-in dining room. Rooms are inspired by the area’s most famous characters. The Catharine (Room 6), named after 1830s settler and author Catharine Parr Traill, is a serene sage green, with a queen bed. Set behind glass doors, the large whirlpool tub has a view of the wood-burning fireplace. Room 9 has a majestic view of Rice Lake. One- to four-hour Rice Lake Boat Cruises (705-887-9313) offer insights into the history of the area. Proprietor Donna Cane will gladly direct guests to local attractions, such as the Serpent Mounds Park (a First Nations burial ground).
